October 15 Parent Communication

Dear NCS Parents:

As another fall week comes to a close, I wanted to reach out with important updates on a handful of topics here at NCS. However, if you would like to talk in more detail, please do not hesitate to call or email when you have time (585-374-7901, mfrahm@naplescsd.org).

Learning Commitments:

When we were putting together our reopening plan over the summer, we asked parents to fill out a “Learning Preference” survey which we used to schedule students as in person, remote, or hybrid learners this fall. In addition, we asked that parents commit to the preference for the first 10 weeks of the school year.

While it is hard to believe, we have already been in session for six weeks, and the 2nd Quarter will begin on Monday, November 9. With this in mind, we are asking that parents fill out this brief survey (click here) by Friday, October 23 ONLY if they are requesting a change in learning preference or a change in transportation for the second 10 weeks of the school year. (If we do not hear from you, we will assume you would prefer to keep your child’s current learning preference.)

I want to emphasize, however, that we are currently running at full capacity. It is critical that parents share any preference change requests as soon as possible so that we can see whether we will have to modify our reopening plan in order to meet the learning needs as well as the safety guidelines required in schools.

Parent-Teacher Conferences:

With a mix of remote and in person learning this year, communication between school and home has been more important than ever. However, because it is essential that we limit the number of visitors we have in our buildings, we will be conducting our annual Parent-Teacher Conferences virtually on November 12 and 13. Rather than having parents come to school, our principals will be reaching out with information on scheduling Zoom or telephone conferences in the coming days.

Flu (Influenza) Information:

This past week, the New York State Department of Education (DOH) asked that school districts remind parents about the importance of helping to prevent the spread of the flu this winter. Because the flu spreads easily and it can cause serious illness in infants and young children, the DOH is recommending that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine every year. (Please click here if you would like additional information regarding the flu, and this link if you are interested in local Flu Shot Clinics.)

Parents Invited to Apply as Substitute Teachers:

For years, schools in New York State have struggled to attract qualified substitute teachers. The onset of COVID-19 has presented additional challenges, and districts are trying to find new ways of securing needed subs to step in for teachers and support staff members. If you might be interested in serving as a substitute teacher at NCS, I would encourage you to fill out an application (click here) as soon as possible. I have listed the per diem rates below, and would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
  • $110 a day for certified and non-certified individuals
  • $140 a day for retired teachers
  • $120 a day for Full-Time Substitutes. (Note: We are currently hiring two Full-Time Substitutes to work each day that students are in attendance. Teacher certification is preferred.)
Wishing you continued good health, and hoping that our paths cross soon.

My best,

Matt
