Information on the Flu
NCS Parents:
Because the health and safety of students is always our first priority, I wanted to take a minute to pass along information related to seasonal influenza (flu). The flu is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs, and symptoms typically include a fever, a cough and/or sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, headaches and/or body aches, chills, fatigue, etc. Because the flu can be spread from one person to another, we suggest that children as well as their parents receive a vaccination each year. In addition, as a preventative measure we also recommend that students and staff follow the “3 C’s”:
Cover your nose and sneeze with the inside of your elbow and not your hands
Cleanse your hands frequently
Contain your germs by staying home when you ...

Music Should Be Part of Every Child’s Academic Experience
Dear NCS Parents:
On January 27 and 28, NCS hosted the 2017 Junior and Senior High All County Music Festival. For two days, our “halls were alive with the sound of music” as students from thirteen area schools played in a Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Chorus. Their presence was a reminder to everyone that music gives students the skills and opportunities needed for success in the 21 st century. By requiring students to dedicate themselves to a task, work hard, be creative, and problem solve, music helps fine-tune the talents that colleges and employers across the world desire. In addition, music is the perfect way to balance the individual with the collective. Because individuals cannot simply become better musicians by reading a book or watching a ...

Community Presentation on Stakeholder Interviews
Dear Members of the Naples School Community:
Over Holiday Break, I had the chance to catch up on a bit of reading. One of the books I picked up off my coffee table was Thomas Friedman’s Thank You for Being Late . Exploring how rapid accelerations in technology, globalization, and climate change have been impacting our lives, Friedman comments on what the world was like ten years ago when he writes:
“Facebook didn’t even exist yet, Twitter was still a sound, the cloud was still in the sky, 4G was a parking space, ‘applications’ were what you sent to college, LinkedIn was barely known and most people thought it was a prison, Big Data was a good name for a rap star, and Skype, for most people, was a typographical error. All of those technologies blossomed ...

Happy Holidays from the Naples Central School District!
Dear Naples School Community:
This past weekend, a friend passed along a quotation that they had recently stumbled upon: “Traditions help create memories. Traditions help impart our life values to our children. Traditions help give children a sense of identity. Traditions help create a sense of belonging. Traditions offer a sense of security.”
As we turn our calendars from November to December, we are reminded that the coming weeks bring with them a number of important traditions. In addition to focusing on academics, our students will be canvassing for Operation Santa, performing during concerts, and competing on courts, slopes, and in the pool as the winter sports season begins. We hope that you will consider supporting some of the important traditions that make ...

Weather Related School Cancellations and Closings
Closing school is one of the most difficult decisions districts have to make. While we want our students in school and ready to learn each day, the reality is that we live in upstate New York and the weather can change very quickly.
With the winter months comes an increased focus on student safety, and there are days when we must cancel after school activities or even close school because of unsafe road conditions. Please know that these decisions are made very carefully, and only after consulting weather resources, local highway superintendents, our transportation supervisor, and area school administrators.
In the event of a closing or a cancellation, the District will send out a Connect-Ed Parent Notification on our phone system, and we will post information on the school homepage. ...

Naples CSD to Implement Lockdown Drills
Dear Parents and Guardians:
New York State laws have recently changed requiring the number of safety drills that schools must now practice. One of the biggest changes is practicing “lockdown” drills 4 times per year instead of just once. In the past we have sent home a letter after the lockdown drill and posted information on our website. We will do that again this year so you are informed, as well as to prepare you in case your child has any questions when they come home from school. Below you will find information that our school psychologists, Tammy Matthews and Brian Meteyer, have shared with staff. Our teachers know their students best, but these are guidelines that teachers can use when talking with students. Our staff members always ...

NCS Communicates Water Testing Results
Dear Members of the Naples School Community:
During the 2015/2016 school year, I shared with you that the District had asked Leader Professional Services, Inc. (“Leader”) to sample and test for lead in our water sources. On May 14 and 18, 2016, Leader collected 241 samples from the Elementary School and the High School that were evaluated following the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) testing protocol outlined in, “3Ts for Reducing Lead in Drinking Water in Schools.”
This past spring, Leader shared with us the results from its water testing. In our Elementary School, one non-drinking water source in our boiler room tested above the EPA action level of 15 ppb (ug/l). This area is not accessible to students, and Leader indicated that the lead found ...
